Real People, Real Faces
A headshot photographer’s note on what it actually takes to show up in front of a camera
I don’t ever post reviews.
But recently, a client left a review that I couldn’t ignore. She’s a trauma therapist. Someone whose entire professional life is built around helping people feel safe, seen, and understood. And she used those exact words to describe her experience in front of my camera.
That stopped me.
The people I work with best
I’m a portrait and headshot photographer based in North London. And the clients I connect with most deeply aren’t the ones who arrive confident and camera-ready.
They’re the ones who feel a little exposed by the whole thing. Who want to show up honestly but aren’t quite sure how. Who’ve been putting it off for months, maybe years, because something about it feels uncomfortable.
That’s not a problem to solve. That’s exactly where we start.
What a headshot session with me actually feels like
My studio is in North London. It’s calm, unhurried, and nothing like a commercial photography studio. There’s no conveyor belt, no rush, no feeling that you need to perform.
We talk before I pick up the camera. I want to know how you want to feel in your images, what you do, who you’re talking to, and what you’re uncomfortable with. That conversation shapes everything.
By the time we start shooting, most people have forgotten to be nervous.
The result is images that feel genuinely like you. Not a polished, flattened version of you. You.
In her own words
“As a trauma therapist, I deeply value feeling safe, seen, and understood. From my very first consultation with Sam Black, it was clear that this would be an exceptional experience. Sam’s gentle, attentive presence immediately set the tone. She truly listens, taking time to understand exactly what you want through thoughtful conversations about your personal preferences, dislikes, style, and even colour choices. Her unique ability to create a space where you feel genuinely heard is rare and deeply appreciated.
This level of care is beautifully reflected when you arrive at her distinctive home studio. Sam has created an environment that feels both calming and supportive, allowing you to relax fully while she gently guides the process. Her approach fosters a sense of safety and authenticity, which is especially meaningful to me as someone who understands the importance of feeling comfortable in vulnerable spaces.
Sam’s remarkable talent lies not only in her artistic skill but also in her ability to help your true essence emerge naturally. The result is stunning, authentic images that genuinely capture who you are.
Thank you, Sam, for such an outstanding, memorable, and deeply affirming experience.”
Why authenticity matters more than ever
In 2026, people can spot an inauthentic image immediately. AI-generated headshots, over-retouched portraits, stock-photo energy. None of it builds trust.
What builds trust is a real face. An honest expression. A photograph that says: this is who I am, and I’m not hiding.
Whether you’re a therapist, a coach, a creative, a consultant, or a business owner, your headshot is often the first impression you make. It should feel like the real you, because the real you is what people choose when they work with you.
Based in North London, working with people who are ready to be seen
I work with clients across North London, and throughout London, including Islington, Highgate, Hampstead, Stoke Newington, Finsbury Park, and beyond.
Sessions are personal, unhurried, and built around you.
If you’ve been putting off getting headshots done because something about it feels uncomfortable, that’s the most important reason to get in touch.
